Data Breaches at Hilton and Trump Hotels

In August, Visa alerted many financial institutions of a security breach that took place between April 21 and July 27 of this year. The notifications included the credit card numbers that Visa believed might have been compromised during this time period.

Sources from those banks determined that these credit cards had been used at Hilton properties, according to security expert Brian Krebs. These included Embassy Suites, Doubletree, Hampton Inn and Suites, and the Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts. Hilton assured customers they “take any potential issue very seriously, and we are looking into this matter.”

Hilton was not the only hotel company breached. The Trump Hotel Collection released a statement that between May 19, 2014 and June 2, 2015, credit card numbers, card expiration dates and security codes may have been compromised. The statement went on to report, “there may have been unauthorized malware access to some of the computers that host our front desk terminals and payment card terminals in our restaurants, gift shops and other point-of-sale purchase locations.”

The properties that were breached were Trump SoHo New York, Trump National Doral, Trump International New York, Trump International Chicago, Trump International Waikiki, Trump International Hotel & Tower Las Vegas, and Trump International Toronto.

Trump Hotel Collection is offering guests who stayed at their properties during this time period a free year of Experian credit monitoring services. They ask clients to call 877-803-8586 for more information.

For both companies, it appears as if the breach took place in the hotel gift shops and restaurants, so it may not affect customers who only used their cards to reserve a room.
